Can neodymium magnets restore magnetism?

A common question among magnetic hobbyists nowadays is whether neodymium magnets can regain their magnetic properties after demagnetization. The answer to this question is not easy, as it depends on many factors.

When neodymium magnets are heated to 80° Celsius, they are only partially lost. In this case, the magnet can even gain some strength over time. However, this depends on the conditions under which the magnet does not experience thermal shock.

However, if a neodymium magnet is heated above its Curie point, this leads to a permanent loss of power. If this happens, you have no choice but to throw it away because it is useless.


What is the reason for choosing neodymium magnets?

The magnetic energy value of neodymium magnets is about 18x the volume and 12x the mass of a "normal" ferrite magnet. This magnetic property of NdFeB alloys is higher than that of SmCo magnets, the first commercially available rare earth magnets. In fact, the magnetic properties of neodymium magnets depend on the alloy composition, microstructure and manufacturing technology used.

The crystal structure of Nd2Fe14B can be described as an alternating layer of iron atoms and neodymium-boron compounds. The relatively low rare earth content (12 vol.-%, 26.7 mass percentage) and the relative frequency of neodymium and iron compared to samarium and cobalt make neodymium magnets less expensive than samarium cobalt magnets.

The greater strength of neodymium magnets has inspired new applications in areas where magnets have not previously been used, such as magnetic jewelry clasps, magnetic puzzle sets for children (and other neodymium magnetic toys), and as part of the locking mechanism of modern sports parachute equipment.

The strength and uniformity of the magnetic field of neodymium magnets has also opened up new applications in the medical field with the introduction of open magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for imaging the body in radiological departments as a replacement for superconducting magnets with superconducting wire coils to generate magnetic fields.

neodymium magnets are used as a surgically placed anti-reflux system, which is a magnet surgically implanted around the lower esophageal sphincter to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
